Today we are featuring EMBERS Staffing worker Emem!

Emem joined EMBERS Staffing in September 2023 after struggling to find work as an international student. Through chatting with friends, Emem learned of EMBERS Staffing, attended an orientation and has been with us ever since.

As Emem describes, “It wasn’t easy getting a job, not having Canadian work experience.” Emem started as a General Labourer and is now doing Traffic Control Person (TCP) work. Many people face the same struggle with their qualifications and previous work experience not being recognized in Canada. In her home country, Emem studied Microbiology and worked in the banking industry. Currently, she is studying to get her MBA while working. Her long-term goal is to become a Project Manager in the construction industry, using her on-the-ground experience to gain knowledge about the industry and its practices.

Emem has participated in a variety of EMBERS programs, including our training, Match Cash Savings Plan and the Worker Support program.

“I got interested, started working and got training. I completed free Fall Protection training, WHMIS and did the Traffic Control Person (TCP) training on my own. I also enrolled in the Match Cash Savings Plan which I used towards my tuition. Holly [EMBERS Worker Support/Outreach Worker] helped connect me with an affordable grocery plan which has been a big help. The PPE and lunch go a long way too. As long as you are willing to work there is no end to increases in your pay cheque. The more dedication you show, the more you get in return.”

EMBERS programs are designed to provide people a hand up so that they can advance in their careers. For example, our Match Cash Savings Plan matches up to $600 for eligible savings goals that help people towards their employment, such as education, training certifications, technology and more. We also have a Worker Support program that helps connect people with resources in the community, such as the affordable grocery plan that Emem is part of.

Emem’s advice for new EMBERS Staffing workers? “My number one advice for people is to go to EMBERS. They will take care of you. Go with your heart and go to work. You have to show up and check your schedule. If anything comes up, let them know. You can learn from all the different positions.”

Emem’s commitment to working towards her goals inspires us all. Alongside studying for her MBA, Emem is an outstanding EMBERS Staffing worker and volunteers in the community, as giving back is important to her. We admire Emem’s hard-working and positive attitude and are sure she will succeed in her career aspirations!
